Football is such a vast sport that there are infinite ways to train, plan, and manage a team. Every coach, deep down, is a traveler with their own map and their own way of navigating it. For me, the training process is very much like traveling.

Some trips are hyper-planned down to the last detail, while others are designed with a certain flexibility. Sometimes you know exactly where you will sleep (because you booked a hotel), but not what you will eat (that will depend on what’s on the menu).

When I start with a team, I ask myself the same question I do when planning a trip: Where am I starting from, and where do I want to go?

Macro-principles → They are the big destinations: playing style, team identity, collective values.

Principles → They are like choosing whether you will sleep in a hotel, a campsite, or an apartment: they shape the experience and the feelings.

Micro-principles → They are the details that make the journey easier or harder: the sleeping bag, the sheets, an improvised sofa.

In football, as in travel, you cannot control every moment, but you can define the direction and the rules of the path. The important thing is to be clear about your starting point, your destination, and the elements you will not compromise along the way.

And you—if you were given a team tomorrow… what would your map look like?

As a coach, I have had the opportunity to lead teams with outstanding results, including winning the Algerian Cup in my most recent tenure. Beyond the title, my greatest achievement has been developing the individual and collective talent of the players under my guidance, transforming anarchy into freedom and chaos into game principles.

My methodology is based on something very simple: bringing order and structure to an ecosystem where each player can grow and fully realize their potential.

I consider myself a sculptor who, step by step, chisels and polishes each footballer, transforming them into a more complete and improved version of themselves, while guiding their talent to shine in service of the team.

For some time now, we have witnessed football being conceptualized to an extreme degree. Recently, social media echoed statements that quickly went viral. A coach twisted language in such a way that many of us in this profession felt as if we were listening to someone talking about another sport. This is not an isolated case.

The creativity that, unfortunately, we increasingly miss on the pitch seems to have conquered TV studios and broadcasts, causing many coaches—especially the new generation—to become great imitators, jumping on the bandwagon of a rhetoric sprinkled with “cool” and supposedly “modern” terms that sell well (marketing) but, at their core, explain nothing beyond the packaging… You only need to listen to the great coaches of our time—Guardiola, Klopp, Ancelotti, Simeone, to name just a few—to realize that those who truly understand football do not need to adorn their speech with complex words to explain the game.

Today I want to focus on one of these trendy terms: “the search for the free man.” The term “free man” refers to a player who is not being marked by an opponent and therefore has the freedom to receive a pass, move, or participate in play without immediate pressure from the adversary. This free player is usually in a strategic position to receive the ball, advance, and/or create opportunities for their team.

The idea behind having a free man is to generate numerical superiority in certain areas of the pitch. If a player is unmarked, they can receive the ball without pressure and make more effective tactical decisions, such as progressing with the ball, delivering a key pass, or taking a shot at goal. Creating a free man often involves coordinated and tactical movements by the team to unmark a player and create space for them. As coaches, we try to design specific strategies to free a key player and take advantage of their ability to positively influence the development of play. Up to this point, that is the explanation of the concept.

However, I often have the impression that nowadays, rather than being a means to an end, for many coaches it has become an end in itself, treated almost like the Holy Grail. Many coaches, especially novices, engage in an idolized pursuit of the term without considering its practical application, leaving many theoretical expectations exposed but few practical results, as their teams are often unable to progress beyond midfield—and that, by any measure, is always a problem.

Focusing excessively on theory and trying to conceptualize everything (it looks great in a book, on a TV program, or of course, in a Twitter thread) often becomes so abstract that it distances us from the practical reality of the game, limits player creativity, and significantly restricts the intrinsic emotion and passion of football. The inherent complexity of this sport, with multiple interactive variables constantly changing, makes it impossible to conceptualize and predict all possible scenarios. Hence, balancing theory and practice, conceptualization and intuition, is essential for a complete and rich understanding of the game.

That said, we must not forget that in modern football, the true “free man” always wears a different color, has gloves on his hands, and stands alone guarding the opposing goal. Therefore, that is where our search must be directed…

I often use metaphors to illustrate ideas that help my footballers understand them more easily. One I frequently use regarding the game in general, the match plan, and our style is that of a blank canvas.

Let’s imagine a painter commissioned to create a painting by a client. Or better yet, let’s imagine that we are our own clients and want to decorate the walls of our home. From a few broad strokes that I (the coach) make on the white canvas, the artist (painter) — or rather, the artists (footballers) — must be able to complete a painting worthy of hanging in the main living room, visible to everyone. In other words, as a team, we have to be capable of delivering a work that meets these expectations.

The broad strokes I give my footballers are part of the initial plan. They are a guide through which our game must flow. Two, three, four ideas that the team needs to know how to interpret, complete, and develop with their respective brushes (talent).

If I draw an oval circle, it’s very likely that the player—or players—will interpret that shape as the sketch of a face and see in it the opportunity to keep shaping it (fine brush = talent) until it is completed according to their taste and in our way. Continuing with this example, one might draw the eyes, another would add the hair, another the mouth, and another artist (player) would refine the lips, and so on, until the painting is finished with more or less detail.

Naturally, we can stick to minimalism, which is also a style in itself and has its own beauty. In fact, there are countless practical teams whose simple yet effective play results in works that are well known and appreciated by everyone. Similarly, we all know teams whose artists lean toward the baroque, and they too earn recognition and create high-level works. Ultimately, it all depends on the artists we have and their ability to handle the brush. This circumstance, and no other, will define our pictorial style.

In any case, whatever we paint, as coaches we must encourage our artists to express themselves from a few broad strokes, so that together we can create something that improves an empty wall, pleases, excites, fits with the rest of the décor, inspires, and adds value—economic, sentimental, or otherwise—something that makes us proud to see it preside over the wall of our main living room.

So, come on! Paint, brush, and fine brush!
